The 82-year-old pontiff skipped a mass with Roman clergy marking the start of Lent.
The announcement comes a day after the head of Roman Catholic Church held an Ash Wednesday mass in support for coronavirus sufferers. He shook hands with the faithful during the event.
The outbreak of COVID-19 coronavirus killed 12 people in Italy and infected more than 400, the most hit country outside of Asia.
